Adaptation: How to Make Your Clothing Work for You

Have you ever come across an article of clothing that was nice but wasn’t quite all that you needed? Whether the answer to this question is yes or no, you will learn all about how to adapt a look into something that works for you and makes you happy.

I sometimes come across cute clothing that is either:

(a) too big but too good of a deal to pass up, so I get it altered or (b) not quite to my liking, so I choose to get it altered. I guess what I am trying to say is anything can be altered to fit you and your style. Do not let your fashion die due to your clothing not being the right size or to your liking. Where there is a will, there is a way! That is one thing that fashion has taught me. Any look that you want is achievable, you must learn to adapt and create the look that you want. Adaptation is defined as change that allows a structure (organism) to function better in a particular environment.

Every year my family has a family reunion and on Sundays we have an awards banquet where we get fancy and put on our best formal attire. Well one year, I wanted a really nice formal dress. I found one online and it fit perfectly, but wasn’t quite to my liking. The dress that I bought was a hot pink, high-low tube dress. I had an idea in my head of how I wanted my dress to look. I wanted it to have sparkly straps to match my shoes and some type of covering/closure in the back. So my mom and I went on a mission to find some chiffon-like material that matched the color of my dress. We went to a few stores and finally found some material that was exactly what I wanted. I also found this gorgeous spool of bedazzled ribbon that was great. It went from a tube dress to a sleeveless dress thanks to my mom and aunt. They brought my vision to life and adapted my dress to what I envisioned. This dress easily became my favorite formal dress

A few tips for adapting are to:

  1. get a good tailor or seamstress, if you’re like me and can not sew. lol
  2. decide what you do not like about the clothing and what you can do to make it where it will look better, compliment your body type, and make you happy.
  3. find material (or accessories) that compliment the clothing! The goal is for the clothing to look natural (as if it was made that way), but still also uniquely you.

Always remember that no matter what you wear, make sure that you are comfortable and happy with your choice! From now on, if you see something that you like, but isn’t quite what you want all you need is a good tailor or seamstress and a vision! Once your masterpiece is complete, show it off and turn some heads. lol

Until next time, keep adapting!
