Fashion Traits

A trait is defined as a specific characteristic that is genetically determined. I feel that when it comes to fashion there are steps or phases when it comes to your fashion traits.

Phase 1 is inherited traits. These are the traits that were developed from your parents, based on the way they dressed you growing up. This is typically your parent’s style that is passed down to you.

Phase 2 is evolutionary or evolved traits. This is the change or transitionary period where you begin to develop and experiment with your style. You begin to change your inherited traits or leave them behind all together. You test out different looks, fabrics, styles, cuts, and prints to determine what works best for you, makes you feel good, and also expresses your full, authentic self. You get inspiration from those around you or what you may see in a magazine, on tv, or from your favorite artist(s), model(s), etc.

Phase 3 is established traits. This is when you’ve developed your own style. You now know what works for you. You know that you prefer wide leg pants over straight leg pants. You know that white is not your color but red is your color. You know what makes you look and feel your best. You are confident in your closet and fashion personality. Fashion personality is what dictates how you adapt clothes to your own style. It is your style and what makes your closet yours, much like a person’s personality makes up who they are as a person. The way you dress can reveal who you are as a person. For instance, someone who always wears fun colors and prints would be someone that is described as being free, fun, and spontaneous. While someone who always wears black or neutral colors could be considered boring or someone that is not spontaneous and sticks to a routine.

There are many styles of fashion. Your overall style can tell a lot about who you are. While it is not fair for people to judge us based on our attire, this is often the case. Many people determine who you are at first glance. Is it always an accurate depiction of who you are? No, but that is how some people determine whether to even engage in conversation.

Someone who shows up for a job interview with jeans is less likely to get a job or be taken seriously as someone who shows up in a full suit.

While fashion traits are genetically determined, they can be changed. Not all people experience every phase of traits but some do. I definitely did and I am still changing my style every year. At the end of the day, I say wear what you love! Wear what is comfortable and makes you feel good!

Until next time,
